Paradigm Therapeutics, a privately held, clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company, has been named a finalist for the 2026 Prix Galien USA Best Start-Up Award for the second consecutive year. The company’s October 2026 announcement recognizes SD-101 (Zorblesia™), an investigational topical cream being developed to treat epidermolysis bullosa (EB), a group of rare genetic disorders characterized by fragile skin and recurrent wounds.

The 2026 awards ceremony is scheduled for October 29 at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. The nomination highlights the unmet medical need in EB and Paradigm’s development program, although the award recognition itself does not establish the treatment’s clinical benefit.

Epidermolysis Bullosa: An Unmet Treatment Need

EB comprises inherited disorders that make the skin vulnerable to blistering, tearing and open wounds following minor friction or trauma. Symptoms can begin at birth and persist throughout life, with severity varying by the underlying condition. The three major subtypes include simplex, dystrophic and junctional EB.

Management can involve wound care, infection prevention, pain relief and control of itching. The burden of recurrent wounds makes treatments that can address extensive skin involvement an important development objective.

Paradigm has positioned SD-101 as a potential treatment across EB subtypes and the entire skin surface, rather than for selected wounds alone. This is a company-described treatment objective, and its clinical relevance depends on demonstrating meaningful and consistent benefits across the intended patient population.

SD-101: Development Approach and Regulatory Designations

SD-101 is a topical cream designed for daily application across the body surface. Paradigm describes it as a treatment intended for wounds and lesions across all EB subtypes. The formulation reportedly requires no special handling and can be stored at room temperature.

The company acquired worldwide rights to SD-101 in 2023. Its reported regulatory designations include FDA Breakthrough Therapy, Rare Pediatric Disease and Orphan Drug designations, as well as a previous Orphan Drug designation from the European Commission.

Paradigm also states that approval could make it eligible for a Priority Review Voucher, subject to applicable regulatory requirements.

These designations can support development and regulatory interactions, but they do not establish that a treatment is effective or safe. Approval will depend on the relevant clinical evidence and regulatory review.

Clinical Development: What the Available Evidence Shows

According to Paradigm, completed Phase 2 and Phase 3 trials evaluated SD-101 in 217 pediatric and adult patients across simplex, dystrophic and junctional EB. The cream was reportedly applied daily across the body surface for three months, including in children as young as 28 days.

The company describes the findings as suggesting broad benefits across wounds and lesions, alongside a favorable long-term safety profile. However, its announcement does not provide efficacy estimates, primary endpoint results, statistical analyses or adverse event rates. These claims therefore cannot be independently assessed from the cited announcement alone.

The development program also includes a confirmatory study in pediatric patients aged 28 days to 12 years. The draft’s cited ClinicalTrials.gov record identifies SD-007 (NCT07482787) as a Phase 3, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, with primary completion estimated for May 2027. SD-008 (NCT07482813) is described as an open-label extension safety study.

The available announcement does not establish which registry entry corresponds to the described confirmatory pediatric study. The study designs, recruitment status and estimated dates should be verified against the current registry records.

Clinical Interpretation: Confirmatory Results Will Be Decisive

The second consecutive Prix Galien USA finalist recognition highlights continued attention to SD-101 and the treatment challenges associated with EB. However, the nomination is not clinical evidence, and the available announcement does not establish the magnitude or durability of any treatment benefit.

A topical therapy that can be applied across the skin surface and potentially benefit patients across EB subtypes could address an important treatment need. Whether SD-101 achieves this objective remains to be demonstrated through adequately reported clinical results.

The confirmatory Phase 3 program is therefore important for determining whether the reported benefits translate into clinically meaningful improvements. Interpretation of future results should focus on the treatment’s effect relative to placebo, consistency across EB subtypes, and outcomes relevant to patients, including pain, itching and quality of life. Longer-term safety also warrants particular attention in infants and young children.

Paradigm Chief Executive Officer Robert Ryan, Ph.D., said the consecutive nomination reflects progress in EB and the company’s development work. He also highlighted the need for whole-skin treatment options and the company’s efforts to complete SD-101 development while exploring potential partnerships for global access.

Until confirmatory data and regulatory review establish its benefit-risk profile, SD-101 remains investigational. The next meaningful milestone is not the award outcome, but the evidence demonstrating whether the cream can deliver sustained, clinically relevant benefits across the intended EB population.
