Eli Lilly and Abbisko Therapeutics have entered a new global research collaboration and licensing agreement to discover and develop innovative medicines against multiple therapeutic targets. The agreement expands a relationship first established in 2022 and combines Abbisko’s early-stage drug discovery capabilities with Lilly’s global clinical development and commercialization expertise.
Under the agreement, Abbisko will lead discovery and early development activities for novel drug candidates directed at disease targets selected by Lilly. Lilly will oversee later-stage development and global commercialization of any products that emerge from the collaboration.
Abbisko is eligible to receive an upfront payment, along with development, regulatory, and commercial milestone payments totalling up to approximately US$1.9 billion. The company is also eligible for tiered royalties based on annual net sales of commercialized products.
Collaboration Builds on Abbisko’s Drug Discovery Platform
The partnership leverages Abbisko’s proprietary drug discovery platform, integrated research ecosystem, and expertise in advancing early-stage therapeutic programs. The company has built a pipeline focused on small-molecule therapies and has increasingly partnered with global pharmaceutical companies to accelerate the translation of early scientific discoveries into clinical candidates.
For Lilly, the agreement expands access to externally sourced innovation and complements its strategy of strengthening the early research pipeline through collaborations with biotechnology companies.
Although the companies did not disclose the therapeutic targets covered under the agreement, the collaboration spans multiple discovery programs with global development potential.
Expands a Relationship Established in 2022
The latest agreement follows a global collaboration and exclusive licensing deal signed by Abbisko and Lilly in 2022. That partnership focused on the discovery, development, and potential commercialization of a novel small-molecule therapeutics.
The expanded alliance reflects continued confidence in Abbisko’s scientific capabilities and suggests that the initial collaboration met key research objectives. Rather than focusing on a single asset, the new agreement broadens the relationship to multiple therapeutic programs, potentially increasing the number of candidates that could advance into clinical development.
Leadership Highlights Long-Term Scientific Value
Company leadership said the expanded partnership reflects the complementary strengths of both organizations. Abbisko will contribute its expertise in identifying and optimizing novel drug candidates during the discovery and early development stages, while Lilly will provide global resources for clinical development, regulatory execution, manufacturing, and commercialization.
The companies expect the collaboration to accelerate the advancement of innovative therapeutic programs and improve the likelihood of bringing new treatment options to patients worldwide.
Development Path
The agreement is primarily a research-stage collaboration, and no individual drug candidates or clinical trial timelines have been disclosed. Future milestone payments will depend on the successful progression of programs through preclinical development, clinical studies, regulatory approvals, and commercial launches.
For Abbisko, the partnership provides significant non-dilutive funding and further validates its drug discovery platform. For Lilly, the deal expands its external innovation network and strengthens its long-term pipeline by adding multiple early-stage therapeutic opportunities across undisclosed disease targets.
