AbCellera and Vertex Pharmaceuticals have entered into a strategic collaboration to research, develop, manufacture, and commercialize multispecific T-cell engagers (TCEs) for autoimmune diseases and other targeted conditions.

The agreement combines AbCellera’s integrated antibody discovery and engineering platform with Vertex’s global development and commercialization capabilities, aiming to expand the pipeline of next-generation immune therapies.

Collaboration Structure & Financial Terms

Under the terms of the agreement, AbCellera will receive $28 million in upfront payments and remains eligible for additional preclinical, development, regulatory, and commercial milestone payments. AbCellera will also be eligible to receive tiered royalties on future net sales of any approved products resulting from the partnership.

AbCellera will lead antibody discovery and early-stage development using its proprietary TCE platform. Vertex will fund all research and development activities and holds exclusive rights to advance and commercialize any therapeutic multispecific antibodies generated. Beyond initial discovery, the companies may jointly agree for AbCellera to handle cell line development, process development, and Phase 1 clinical manufacturing for individual programs.

Expanding T-Cell Engagers Beyond Oncology

T-cell engagers are engineered multispecific antibodies designed to bring T cells into close proximity with disease-associated cells, triggering a highly targeted immune response. While TCE technology has gained significant traction in oncology, researchers are increasingly applying it to autoimmune diseases to selectively eliminate or modulate pathogenic immune cells without causing broader immune suppression.

AbCellera’s end-to-end TCE platform spans the full discovery-to-clinic pipeline. It incorporates proprietary CD3-binding panels, costimulatory targeting domains, multispecific engineering formats, and high-throughput functional screening designed to optimize potency, selectivity, and manufacturability.

While specific disease targets and clinical timelines have not yet been disclosed, Vertex will assume responsibility for late-stage clinical development and global commercialization for all successful candidates.
