The European Commission has approved Pfizer-BioNTech’s XFG-adapted COVID-19 vaccine for individuals aged 6 months and older ahead of the 2026-2027 respiratory season.

The European Commission has granted marketing authorization for the Pfizer-BioNTech 2026-2027 COVID-19 vaccine formula targeting the XFG variant, clearing its use for active immunization against COVID-19 in individuals aged six months and older. The authorization applies across all 27 European Union member states, as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway, ahead of the upcoming respiratory virus season.
The decision follows a positive recommendation from the European Medicines Agency’s Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) on July 23, 2026, and aligns with guidance from the EMA Emergency Task Force (ETF), which recommended updating COVID-19 vaccines to target the XFG variant of the JN.1 lineage. According to the ETF, available evidence indicates that an XFG-based vaccine is expected to provide the broadest protection against currently circulating SARS-CoV-2 variants.
Updated mRNA Vaccine Targets Dominant SARS-CoV-2 Variants
The updated vaccine is based on BioNTech’s proprietary messenger RNA (mRNA) platform, the same technology used in the original Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine. The new formulation contains a single XFG-adapted antigen to better match the evolving viral landscape for the 2026-2027 vaccination season.
Since the first authorization of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, more than five billion doses have been distributed worldwide, providing one of the largest global real-world datasets supporting the platform’s safety and effectiveness.
Continued viral evolution has prompted regulators to recommend periodic vaccine updates, similar to seasonal influenza vaccination strategies, to maintain protection against emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants.
Regulatory Evidence Supported Broad Neutralizing Immune Responses
The European Commission based its approval on a comprehensive evidence package submitted by Pfizer and BioNTech, including clinical, non-clinical, manufacturing, quality, and real-world evidence supporting the vaccine’s established safety and efficacy profile.
Non-clinical immunogenicity data showed that the monovalent XFG-adapted vaccine generated strong immune responses against multiple contemporary SARS-CoV-2 lineages currently circulating worldwide. These included XFG, XFG.1.1, NB.1.8.1, PQ.17, PQ.2.8.1, and several other recently emerging variants.
The cumulative evidence demonstrated that updating the vaccine to the XFG strain preserves broad immune coverage while maintaining the favorable safety profile established across previous Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine formulations.
Manufacturing Already Underway Ahead of Respiratory Virus Season
To ensure timely vaccine availability, Pfizer and BioNTech initiated manufacturing of the XFG-adapted vaccine before regulatory approval. Early production enables rapid distribution across participating European countries as demand for COVID-19 vaccination is expected to increase during the autumn and winter respiratory disease season.
European Union member states and Norway will receive vaccine supplies either through the existing European Commission procurement agreement or according to their respective national vaccination policies.
Global Regulatory Reviews Continue
Pfizer and BioNTech have also submitted the updated XFG-adapted COVID-19 vaccine to regulatory authorities in multiple countries outside Europe. The companies continue to monitor the global evolution of SARS-CoV-2 and plan to support seasonal vaccination strategies through updated vaccine formulations as new variants emerge.
The latest European authorization strengthens the companies’ global COVID-19 vaccine portfolio while ensuring that healthcare systems have access to an updated vaccine matched to the dominant circulating SARS-CoV-2 lineage before the 2026-2027 respiratory virus season.
