The official website of US government dietary regulations has published 2025 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee’s Scientific Report. The report includes the independent, fact-based recommendations and findings of the 2025 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The two departments will use the Scientific Report, public feedback, and input from government agencies to inform the development of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2025-2030, which is anticipated to be released in late 2025.

On commenting on guidelines Nestle stated, this seems to be the same as every other set of dietary recommendations since 1980: eat more vegetables and limit your intake of foods heavy in sugar, salt, and saturated fat. According to the nutrition panel’s findings, a balanced diet for individuals two years of age and above should include more fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, whole grains, seafood, and vegetable oils that are higher in unsaturated fat. Red and processed meats, sugar-sweetened foods and drinks, refined grains, and saturated fat are all reduced. Additionally, it might contain plant-based foods, foods with less sodium, and dairy products that are fat-free or low-fat.

“National nutrition programs, guidelines, and instruction are built upon the Dietary Guidelines. They offer tools and advice to medical professionals to help the general public select a generally healthy diet that suits them. HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra stated, “They also assist HHS, USDA, and other federal agencies in customizing our policies to best serve the American people.” This report will contribute to ensuring that the next version of the Dietary Guidelines takes socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, and culture into account and is grounded in the most recent scientific and medical information. I want to express my gratitude to the Committee for their tireless efforts and to the American people for participating in this process by working together, we can enable Americans to benefit from a nutritious diet and the associated health advantages.

The deliberate emphasis on health equity in the 2025 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee’s work is noteworthy since it made sure that socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, and culture were taken into account as much as possible. In addition, the Committee broadened the examination of evidence beyond the types and quantities of foods that are advised to include methods for successfully promoting healthy eating habits throughout life.

“As we collaborate to guarantee that children, individuals, and families nationwide have access to wholesome, safe, and reasonably priced food, USDA and HHS are thrilled to start the next stage of developing the Dietary Guidelines for Americans,” stated USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack. “We value the scientific knowledge, commitment, careful consideration, and cooperation of the independent Committee. We are also grateful to the groups and people who offered public feedback, which was a crucial input to the Committee’s approach. We anticipate more public feedback on the results presented in this Scientific Report.

HHS and USDA will invite the public to submit written feedback on the Committee’s Scientific Report during a 60-day public comment period. On January 16, 2025, the departments will also host a public hearing to hear oral public comments on the Scientific Report. The public meeting requires pre-registration. DietaryGuidelines.gov has further details on the public meeting and feedback period.

As HHS and USDA collaborate to create the upcoming version of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the country’s primary source of nutrition advice, the Committee’s Scientific Report will be a crucial resource taken into account. The foundation of federal nutrition programs and regulations, the Dietary Guidelines for Americans are updated every five years and offer food-based guidelines to help prevent chronic diseases linked to diet and to enhance general health.

The outcome of a multi-year process, the Scientific Report demonstrates the dedication of USDA and HHS to openness. The public was asked to provide feedback on the suggested scientific questions for the Committee’s review in 2022 by HHS and USDA. Furthermore, the public nominated each member of the Committee. For over 18 months during the Committee’s deliberative process, HHS and USDA encouraged the public to provide written and oral comments to the Committee, and each of the Committee’s seven public meetings has been streamed online via videocast to enhance public participation. More than any previous Committee, the Committee received about 9,900 public comments, which influenced the production of its Scientific Report and its evaluation of the available data.
