AbbVie has announced the launch of Love in Mind™, a new educational initiative designed to broaden public understanding of migraine beyond its physical symptoms. The campaign aims to bring attention to the emotional and relational challenges faced by people living with migraine, with a special focus on dating and romantic relationships.

Migraine is not simply a headache. It is a chronic, often underdiagnosed neurological disease that affects nearly 40 million Americans and can cause severe, disabling pain. While the condition is widely recognized for its physical burden, AbbVie’s initiative emphasizes that migraine can also deeply affect emotional well-being, intimacy, and personal connections.

When Migraine Affects More Than the Body

As part of the Love in Mind campaign, AbbVie partnered with The Harris Poll to conduct a national survey exploring how migraine influences the social and romantic lives of adults diagnosed with the condition.

The survey included 606 U.S. adults living with migraine and revealed that the disease often interferes with relationship dynamics and emotional presence.

Key findings from the survey include:

  • 89% of respondents agreed it is difficult to feel fully present in a romantic relationship during a migraine attack.
  • 51% reported cancelling or rescheduling a date because of migraine, averaging eight missed dates per year.
  • 78% admitted they sometimes try to push through migraine pain in order to maintain physical intimacy.

These results highlight that migraine affects not only daily functioning, but also the ability to connect emotionally and physically with a partner.

AbbVie Emphasizes the Need for Open Dialogue in Care

AbbVie leaders noted that understanding migraine requires acknowledging its broader impact on confidence, relationships, and self-image.

“These survey results highlight how migraine can extend beyond the physical to affect the relationships and moments that matter most,” said Aubrey Adams, PhD, therapeutic area head of migraine medical affairs at AbbVie. She emphasized that discussing the emotional and social burden of migraine with healthcare providers can be a meaningful step toward more comprehensive management.

Jessie James Decker Shares Her Personal Migraine Journey

The initiative also features the voice of Jessie James Decker, country music star and entrepreneur, who has lived with migraine symptoms since middle school but received a diagnosis years later.

Decker shared how migraine has affected her ability to participate in important personal moments, including attending her husband’s football games despite knowing that noise and bright lights could trigger an attack.

“I want to be fully present, but with migraine, that’s not always easy,” she said. She encouraged others to speak honestly with their doctors about the ways migraine impacts their most meaningful relationships and experiences.

Her story reflects the reality that migraine can shape emotional connection and quality of life far beyond physical pain.

Relationship Guidance for People Living with Migraine

In addition to personal stories, AbbVie’s Love in Mind campaign includes relationship advice from licensed therapist and bestselling author Nedra Glover Tawwab.

Tawwab offers strategies for navigating relationship challenges while living with migraine, including:

  • Prioritizing open communication with partners
  • Practicing self-compassion
  • Setting realistic expectations
  • Managing intimacy and emotional connection during difficult periods

These tools are intended to help couples strengthen understanding and reduce feelings of guilt or isolation.

Accessing Resources Through Love in Mind

The initiative provides educational materials, survey insights, patient stories, and relationship support resources through its official website:

www.LoveInMind.com

The platform aims to empower people with migraine to seek better care, improve communication, and recognize that emotional health is a vital part of migraine management.

AbbVie’s Commitment to Migraine Care

AbbVie continues to expand its role in migraine treatment and awareness. The company states it is the only organization with three prescription migraine treatments designed to address patient needs across the full spectrum of the disease.

Through education, research, and partnerships with the migraine community, AbbVie aims to reduce barriers to care and support patients in achieving greater migraine freedom.
