In 2025, two new COVID-19 variants, Stratus (XFG) and Nimbus (NB.1.8.1), have been pushing an evident increase in COVID cases across the United States and the United Kingdom. These variants, both descendants of the Omicron family, carry mutations that enhance their transmissibility and allow them to evade immune defenses, leading to widespread infections. This article explores the latest scientific insights, symptoms, spread, and safety measures associated with these new variants.

What Are the Stratus and Nimbus Variants?

Stratus and Nimbus are recombinant Omicron sub-lineages identified in early 2025. Stratus (XFG) originated in Southeast Asia and quickly spread globally, becoming the dominant strain in many regions. Nimbus (NB.1.8.1) was first identified in China and has similarly spread worldwide.

Stratus (XFG): A hybrid of two Omicron-related variants (LF.7 and LP.8.1.2), exhibiting increased ability to evade immune responses.

Nimbus (NB.1.8.1): Known for its efficient cell attachment, making it highly transmissible but not more severe in illness.

In the USA, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recognize that the Stratus (XFG) variant is currently dominant in many states. While it spreads more easily and can partially evade immunity, CDC officials confirm that there is no current evidence of increased hospitalization or mortality rates associated with Stratus.  Experts like Dr. Rishi Khakhkhar, Chief Medical Officer at Counsel Health, observe that COVID-19 is settling into a more seasonal respiratory virus pattern. He highlights that although infections may surge with these new variants, population immunity from vaccines and prior infections provides strong protection against severe disease and hospitalization. In the UK, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) states that while Stratus and Nimbus substantially account for recent COVID cases; current data does not show more severe illness or increased death rates from these variants.

Current Situation in the USA

In the United States, Stratus has overtaken Nimbus as the dominant COVID-19 variant, accounting for approximately 79-85% of cases in many states, especially in the western parts and urban centers. Wastewater surveillance data indicate high to very high viral levels in 19 states. The rise in cases coincides with increased social interactions, travel, and relatively low vaccine uptake during summer and autumn. Despite higher transmissibility, the severity of illness caused by Stratus is comparable to previous Omicron subvariants. Updated vaccines targeting these variants are available and recommended as preventive measures.

Current Situation in the UK

The UK is experiencing a surge mainly driven by Stratus (about 63% of monitored cases) followed by Nimbus (approx. 25%). Health authorities in the UK advise vigilance but report that these variants have not increased the severity of disease. Both variants predominantly cause mild to moderate symptoms. UK Health Security Agency emphasizes self-isolation and avoiding vulnerable contacts when infected. Stratus may sometimes cause a hoarse voice and Nimbus frequently produces a sharp “razor-blade” sore throat, intense fatigue, mild cough, and digestive issues.

Symptoms to Watch For

Both Stratus and Nimbus largely present symptoms similar to earlier Omicron strains with some distinctive features:

Common symptoms: sore throat, cough, fatigue, nasal congestion, fever, body aches.

  • Nimbus-specific: sharp, stabbing razor-blade sore throat, nausea, and digestive discomfort.
  • Stratus-specific: hoarse voice and sore throat.

Why Are These Variants Spreading Rapidly?

The continuous evolution of the SARS-CoV-2 virus results in variants with mutations that can increase transmission efficiency and ability to evade immunity from prior infections or vaccinations. Stratus and Nimbus carry such mutations, placing them as dominant strains in several regions while not necessarily causing worse clinical outcomes.

Preventive Measures and Recommendations

Health experts recommend standard COVID-19 precautions to reduce infection risk from Stratus, Nimbus, or any circulating variant:

  • Stay updated with COVID-19 vaccinations, including booster shots.
  • Practice good hand hygiene and wear masks in crowded or high-risk settings.
  • Avoid close contact with vulnerable populations when symptomatic.
  • Stay home and isolate if infected to limit spread.

Vaccines Available and Guidelines in the USA and UK

Vaccines in the USA

For the 2025-2026 respiratory virus season, COVID-19 vaccines have been updated to better match currently circulating strains like LP.8.1, closely related to Stratus. These vaccines are expected to reduce severe disease and hospitalizations effectively, although mild infections may still occur. Vaccination remains the most effective protection, especially for vulnerable populations. The CDC recommends people consult healthcare providers for the latest booster doses. The updated vaccine, such as Pfizer-BioNTech’s Comirnaty (2025–2026 formula), is approved for adults aged 65 years and older, and for individuals 5 through 64 years of age who have at least one risk factor for severe COVID-19.

Vaccines in the UK

In the UK, for the 2025 “Autumn Booster” programme, free COVID-19 vaccination is offered to people aged 75 and over, residents of older adult care homes, and those who are immunosuppressed.

UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) states that the vaccines in use provide good protection against severe disease and hospitalization, though they note that the newer lineages called Stratus and Nimbus are still under surveillance and do not appear to cause greater severity.
Eligible individuals are encouraged to receive the Autumn Booster when invited and general precautions (e.g. staying home when sick) remain part of public health advice.

Vaccine-Related Guidelines for Both Countries

  • Stay up to date with recommended booster shots tailored for 2025 variants.
  • Vulnerable groups (elderly, immunocompromised, chronic illnesses) should prioritize vaccination.
  • Vaccination helps reduce the risk of severe illness, hospitalization, and long COVID.
  • Vaccines may not fully prevent mild or asymptomatic infections but reduce overall disease burden.
  • Continue protective behaviors such as mask-wearing in crowded settings and self-isolation when symptomatic.

Conclusion

The new COVID variants Stratus and Nimbus are driving a rise in infections in the USA and UK, largely due to their increased transmissibility and immune evasive properties. Thankfully, current evidence suggests these variants do not cause more severe disease than previous Omicron subvariants. Staying informed, maintaining vaccinations, and practicing prevention remain key to managing these evolving variants.
