Novo Nordisk and Anthropic will apply Claude Science and advanced AI models to drug discovery, biological reasoning and software development.

Novo Nordisk and Anthropic are collaborating to apply advanced artificial intelligence to drug discovery, biological reasoning and software development, with an initial focus on using Anthropic’s Claude Science models within Novo’s R&D workflows.

AI Moves Deeper into Drug Discovery

The collaboration will bring together Novo Nordisk’s drug development expertise and Anthropic’s frontier AI models to address scientific challenges identified by Novo’s researchers and computational teams.

The companies will develop targeted AI solutions for selected drug discovery workflows, with a focus on biological reasoning and scientific problem-solving. The objective is to help researchers analyze complex biological information, support hypothesis generation and potentially shorten parts of the drug discovery and development process.

Unlike conventional software applications that perform predefined analytical tasks, newer AI systems can assist with multi-step reasoning across scientific workflows. Their practical value in pharmaceutical R&D, however, will depend on the quality of underlying data, scientific validation and human review.

Claude Science to Be Tested in R&D

As an initial step, Novo will evaluate Claude Science for specific research and development workflows. The companies will prioritize scientific problems where combining Novo’s domain expertise with Anthropic’s AI capabilities could provide measurable value.

The collaboration does not represent approval or clinical validation of an AI-derived medicine. Instead, it establishes a framework for testing whether advanced AI can improve scientific reasoning and productivity across selected stages of pharmaceutical research.

Potential applications include supporting researchers as they work through complex biological questions, interpret scientific information and develop solutions to specific discovery challenges.

Software Engineering Will Support AI Expansion

Novo will also use Anthropic’s frontier models for AI-driven software development. The company views software engineering as an important infrastructure layer for expanding AI applications across its operations.

This could allow Novo teams to develop and scale internal AI tools more efficiently while integrating AI capabilities into broader research and business workflows.

The move builds on Novo Nordisk’s existing use of AI and collaborations with other technology companies as it expands its broader AI strategy.

Human Oversight and Data Governance

Both companies said the collaboration will operate under data governance and human oversight requirements. These controls are intended to ensure that AI applications remain consistent with Novo’s ethical, regulatory and compliance standards.

For pharmaceutical research, this distinction is important because AI-generated hypotheses and analyses require expert verification before they can influence experimental decisions or development programs.

Mike Doustdar, president and CEO of Novo Nordisk, said AI could increase R&D productivity and potentially shorten the path from research to marketed products. He also highlighted the possibility that AI could support new approaches to understanding human biology and drug mechanisms.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said increasingly capable AI models could accelerate biological and medical research by giving scientists access to advanced reasoning tools.

Path Forward

The immediate focus will be on testing Claude Science in defined Novo R&D workflows and identifying scientific problems where the technology can produce useful, validated results.

The collaboration therefore represents an exploratory expansion of AI into pharmaceutical research rather than a specific drug-development program. Its longer-term significance will depend on whether AI-assisted workflows can demonstrate reproducible improvements in scientific productivity, biological understanding and development timelines while maintaining appropriate human oversight.
