Bayer and Henry Ford Health announced a strategic research partnership on July 17, 2026, to expand patient access to clinical trials across multiple therapeutic areas. The collaboration establishes a framework for designing and conducting clinical research within Henry Ford Health’s integrated care network, bringing together Bayer’s global drug development expertise and Henry Ford Health’s comprehensive clinical research capabilities. Henry Ford Health is one of only four U.S. academic health systems selected by Bayer for this strategic research model.

Initial efforts will focus on cardiovascular and renal diseases, including thrombosis, heart failure, stroke, and chronic kidney disease; oncology, including advanced cancers and targeted therapies; and women’s health, including treatments for menopausal symptoms and gynaecologic conditions. The organisations will work collaboratively across the full clinical trial process, using artificial intelligence (AI), advanced analytics, electronic health record (EHR) data, and real-world evidence (RWE) to improve trial design, enhance patient identification, and support more efficient clinical research. These initiatives are intended to reduce barriers to participation and provide patients with earlier access to investigational therapies.

Operational and Commercial Implications

The collaboration aims to integrate clinical research more closely with routine patient care, enabling eligible patients to learn about and participate in clinical trials within the healthcare settings where they already receive treatment. By combining Bayer’s global clinical development expertise with Henry Ford Health’s extensive research infrastructure and diverse patient population, the partnership is expected to strengthen patient recruitment and improve access to innovative therapeutic options.

For Bayer, the collaboration expands access to a large, integrated healthcare network with a diverse patient population, creating opportunities to identify eligible participants more efficiently through electronic health records and established clinical care pathways. By bringing clinical research closer to patients already receiving care within the Henry Ford Health system, the partnership is expected to support more efficient patient recruitment and strengthen Bayer’s ability to conduct clinical trials across its priority therapeutic areas. For Henry Ford Health, the collaboration enhances its clinical research portfolio by increasing opportunities to participate in innovative studies and provide patients with earlier access to investigational therapies.

Regulatory and Compliance Considerations

Clinical studies conducted under the collaboration will operate within established U.S. regulatory frameworks governing human-subject research, including Institutional Review Board (IRB) oversight, Good Clinical Practice (GCP), applicable U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requirements, and compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) for the use of patient health information. The organisations also plan to support training and innovation in healthcare data science while applying AI, analytics, and electronic health record data to improve clinical research in accordance with applicable regulatory and ethical standards.

Financial Milestones and Resource Commitments

Financial terms of the partnership were not disclosed. Bayer continues to invest significantly in pharmaceutical innovation, reporting approximately €45.6 billion in sales, €5.8 billion in research and development investment, and a global workforce of approximately 88,000 employees in fiscal year 2025. Henry Ford Health contributes a large integrated healthcare network, employing more than 50,000 team members across hundreds of care locations, together with an established clinical research infrastructure. The collaboration will leverage the complementary strengths of both organisations to improve clinical trial efficiency, enhance patient access to research, and expand the generation of real-world evidence.

Expected Path Forward

Initial activities will focus on launching collaborative research initiatives in the partnership’s priority therapeutic areas while implementing data- and technology-enabled approaches to improve trial design and patient identification. As the collaboration evolves, Bayer and Henry Ford Health plan to expand research into additional therapeutic areas and continue developing capabilities in AI, analytics, real-world evidence generation, and healthcare data science. Future clinical studies initiated under the partnership will follow standard regulatory review and approval processes applicable to their respective development programmes.
