Jazz Pharmaceuticals and AbCellera have entered a strategic research and licensing agreement to discover and develop next-generation T-cell engaging (TCE) multispecific antibodies for gastrointestinal (GI) cancers and other solid tumors. The partnership combines Jazz’s oncology development expertise with AbCellera’s antibody discovery and engineering platform, positioning both companies in one of the most active areas of cancer immunotherapy.

Under the deal, AbCellera will lead discovery and early-stage research for two initial antibody programs, with a third program slated to launch within 12 months. Jazz will hold exclusive options for each program and may secure worldwide rights to develop and commercialize therapies once those options are exercised.

Expanding T-Cell Engager Technology

T-cell engagers are engineered antibodies that redirect a patient’s immune T cells toward cancer cells, triggering targeted tumor destruction. While the approach has shown success in hematologic malignancies, translating it to solid tumors has proven difficult due to tumor heterogeneity, immune suppression in the tumor microenvironment, and safety concerns.

AbCellera’s platform integrates antibody discovery, multispecific protein engineering, functional screening, and clinical manufacturing. The company has also developed proprietary CD3-binding antibodies and costimulatory targeting technologies designed to enhance T-cell activation while improving selectivity against cancer cells. The collaboration will initially focus on GI cancers and other solid tumors, areas with persistently high mortality despite advances in targeted therapies and immuno-oncology.

 Deal Terms and Milestones

AbCellera will receive $56 million in upfront payments tied to the first two research programs, with an additional $28 million payable when the third program begins. If Jazz exercises its development option for a program, AbCellera could earn up to $792 million per program through option fees and development, regulatory, and commercial milestone payments. The agreement also includes tiered royalties on future net sales ranging from mid-single-digit to low double-digit percentages.

Beyond the initial programs, the companies may initiate up to two additional discovery efforts. AbCellera could also support investigational new drug (IND)-enabling studies and manufacture clinical supply for selected programs.

Strategic Expansion in Oncology

Jazz executives said the collaboration strengthens the company’s oncology pipeline and expands its focus on GI cancers while building on existing research capabilities. AbCellera emphasized its experience in T-cell engager technologies and believes the partnership could accelerate the advancement of novel immunotherapies for difficult-to-treat solid tumors.

The partnership remains in the preclinical stage, with discovery and candidate optimization activities underway. Successful programs will advance into IND-enabling studies before potential clinical testing. Jazz will determine whether to exercise its development options as candidates emerge, setting the stage for future clinical development in GI cancers and other solid tumors.

Clinical Development Landscape

The deal underscores continued industry investment in multispecific antibody technologies as companies seek to extend the success of T-cell engagers beyond blood cancers and into broader solid tumor indications. With significant upfront funding, milestone potential, and a focus on high-mortality cancers, the collaboration reflects growing momentum behind next-generation immunotherapies aimed at reshaping treatment outcomes in solid tumors.
