Johnson & Johnson MedTech has partnered with the Department of Health-Abu Dhabi (DOH) to establish the world’s first international hub for its Polyphonic™ digital surgery ecosystem, positioning the emirate at the forefront of surgical AI innovation.
Building a Connected Operating Room Network
The collaboration integrates Johnson & Johnson’s Polyphonic Surgery platform with Abu Dhabi’s healthcare infrastructure, supported by technology partners Amazon Web Services (AWS) and NVIDIA. Together, they will create a connected operating room network designed to accelerate AI innovation across the surgical workflow.
Major healthcare providers including Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, PureHealth, Mediclinic Middle East, and NMC Healthcare will deploy the platform across operating rooms throughout the emirate.
Advancing Surgical AI Through Data and Collaboration
The Polyphonic platform enables hospitals to contribute anonymized surgical video and multimodal procedural data into a governed infrastructure. This data foundation is intended to support the development of next-generation surgical AI technologies while ensuring compliance with privacy and regulatory standards.
Beyond data aggregation, the system is designed to facilitate real-time collaboration, case review, and operational optimization among surgical teams, creating a continuous learning environment that enhances both clinical practice and research.
“Advancing surgical AI requires collaboration across healthcare systems, clinicians, researchers, and technology partners,” said Hani Abouhalka, Company Group Chair, Surgery, MedTech at Johnson & Johnson. “By working together, we can unlock new insights that improve surgical performance and patient outcomes.”
Governance, Ethics, and Global Positioning
The initiative emphasizes data governance and ethical use of AI, ensuring that anonymized contributions are managed under strict oversight to protect patient privacy. Abu Dhabi’s role as the first global hub for Polyphonic™ underscores its ambition to become a leader in AI-enabled healthcare, with plans to expand the ecosystem internationally.
Strategic Alignment with Abu Dhabi’s Vision
This partnership aligns with Abu Dhabi’s broader strategy to build an AI-enabled healthcare ecosystem that integrates clinical care, research, and digital technologies into a continuous learning network. The emirate aims to leverage AI not only to improve surgical outcomes but also to strengthen its position as a global destination for medical innovation.
Outlook
The rollout across Abu Dhabi’s hospitals is expected to begin in phases, with early deployments serving as testbeds for surgical AI applications. The initiative is anticipated to reduce variability in surgical outcomes, enhance training for clinicians, and optimize operating room efficiency.
