Merck & Co., known as MSD outside the United States and Canada, has entered a multi-year strategic partnership with Google Cloud valued at up to $1 billion to strengthen its digital infrastructure through advanced artificial intelligence integration.

The collaboration will introduce an agent-based AI platform across research and development, manufacturing, commercial operations, and corporate functions, with Google Cloud engineers working alongside Merck teams to implement technologies such as Gemini Enterprise.

The initiative is focused on embedding AI into core business processes to streamline R&D workflows and enhance data analysis. It also aims to improve manufacturing efficiency through predictive analytics and automation.

In addition, the collaboration will enable more personalized engagement in commercial activities while increasing productivity across its global workforce of approximately 75,000 employees.

Dave Williams chief information and digital officer, Merck stated that the partnership represents the next phase of Merck’s AI strategy, noting that AI agents and generative tools are expected to help teams redesign processes at scale and accelerate the delivery of scientific innovations to patients.

Thomas Kurian CEO, Google Cloud said the collaboration reflects a broader shift in how technology supports the pharmaceutical value chain, highlighting that combining AI capabilities with human expertise can improve the speed of drug development and help address complex challenges.

By integrating Merck’s scientific and data capabilities with Google Cloud’s AI and cloud platforms, the partnership aims to digitize operations, enhance decision-making, and support more efficient development and delivery of treatments.
